Amboseli, Kenya

Program Background

With logistical support from our partner, Amboseli Trust for Elephants, earlier this year we conducted a survey of predominantly Maasai herders near Amboseli National Park to improve our understanding of animal (and human) health concerns. The results revealed ongoing challenges related to human-elephant conflict and gave IVO's team insight into common health symptoms affecting cattle, sheep, goats, donkeys, dogs and even people.

Program Dates: Fall 2024

Our Work

We are launching community workshops to equip Maasai herders with practical tools to improve health outcomes in their animals. Topics include ways to prevent illness in animals and people, while demonstrating basic treatments like basic first aid, rehydrating sick animals & people, and even handwashing.

We are also meeting with local academic and governmental organizations to investigate ways to provide specialized training for Kenyan veterinary professionals. This training will address common livestock health issues, and strengthen conservation efforts, while increasing capacity to deliver high-quality and sustainable veterinary services in Amboseli.

Program Partners

Collaboratively, we are working toward sustainable solutions that benefit wildlife, domestic animals, and the Maasai pastoralist communities.
