Amboseli, Kenya

Program Background

In early 2024, our partner Amboseli Trust for Elephants conducted an elephant coexistence survey of predominantly Maasai pastoralists in communities surrounding Amboseli National Park of southern Kenya. IVO included its own questions in the survey to improve understanding of human and domestic animal health concerns. The results revealed ongoing challenges related to human-elephant conflict and gave IVO's team insight into common health symptoms affecting cattle, sheep, goats, donkeys, dogs and even people.

Program Start Year: 2024

Our Work

In October 2024, IVO’s team traveled to Kenya to deliver community workshops that equipped Maasai herders with practical tools to improve health outcomes in their animals. We covered topics like ways to prevent illness in animals and people, while demonstrating basic treatments like basic first aid, rehydrating sick animals & people, and even handwashing.

Additionally, we started working with local academic and governmental organizations to investigate ways to provide improved veterinary service to keep communities healthier. Training sessions for local leaders addressed common health issues in animals and people, strengthening conservation efforts, and increasing the capacity to deliver high-quality and sustainable veterinary care in the communities surrounding Amboseli National Park.

Program Partner

Collaboratively, we are working toward sustainable solutions that benefit wildlife, domestic animals, and the Maasai pastoralist communities.
