A Profound Appreciation for IVO’s East Bay Clinic in Martinez

By Patrick Brod

This past weekend, I had the privilege of witnessing an extraordinary display of teamwork and compassion at a collaborative clinic organized by International Veterinary Outreach (IVO), Contra Costa Animal Services (CCAS), and the Contra Costa Humane Society (CCHS). Eighteen amazing animals received vital care thanks to the efforts of a truly remarkable team made up of UC Davis vet students, volunteers, and life-saving veterinarians and vet techs.

This experience unveiled a world of dedication. My lifelong love for animals goes back to a profound moment at the age of ten. While watching "White Fang," the titular character's mistreatment ignited a deep empathy within me. While my career has been focused on digital marketing  and strategy within the video game industry, animal welfare remains my true passion.

Shadowing the IVO and CCHS teams expanded my perspective. The veterinarians, vet techs, volunteers, and students functioned as a cohesive unit, each member playing a crucial role. Their shared passion for helping animals was truly inspiring. When asked why they volunteered time on a Sunday for the East Bay Clinic, their responses resonated deeply. "We love animals," they'd say, "and the chance to directly impact their well-being and the community is incredibly rewarding. There's also a special camaraderie that comes with working alongside like-minded people, all for a cause we deeply believe in."

Throughout the day, this exceptional team performed eighteen spay/neuter surgeries; fifteen cats and three dogs. Beyond the routine procedures, each animal received comprehensive vaccinations, microchipping, flea treatment, and nail trimmings. This dedication to complete animal wellness left a lasting impression.  Having taken my own dogs to countless vet appointments, I never truly grasped the intricate details involved. From intake to surgery, every step was imbued with professionalism and genuine care.

The two student volunteers impressed everyone with their eagerness and willingness to learn. The vet techs, their expertise honed through countless hours, displayed an effortless efficiency born from a deep love for animals. Witnessing students, vet techs, and vets working seamlessly together, from prepping each animal to performing the spaying and neutering procedures, was truly humbling. The joy and dedication emanating from the team were palpable.

The benefits of spaying and neutering go far beyond simply preventing pet overpopulation and euthanasia. This critical practice tackles the issue at its root, while also promoting responsible pet ownership. It alleviates the burden on overwhelmed shelters and, importantly, helps those who love their animal companions but may struggle to afford necessary medical care.
